Musk Ox - Norway, Oct. 2019

On a early sunday morning, with perfect condition, and perfect placement on a side of a mountain, we were lucky to get really close to this big musk ox (around 30 meters). The musk ox was nice and calm, grassing around, We were very lucky to capture this picture from the side, with the mountains on the other side of the wally. The musk ox lifted it head, and said a loud grunt - perfect timing. This is by far the best picture that we ever seen of a musk ox to date. The picture is taken from around 30 meters away from the musk (safety distance is +200).

The story behind the name of this picture, is that at the time when we took the picture, John Bercow was on his way out of his job as Speaker for the British Parliament. One of the things we remember him by, was when he screamed; “Order, Order”. Since this picture remind us on John Bercow, we thought about calling the picture, for both “Order, Order” and “John Bercow”, but after a lot of debate we ended up with calling it for “The Speaker”.

These amazing ancient animals were reintroduced to Norway in 1931, and live now wild at the mountain plateau around Dovrefjell. Today there is approx. 230 wild musk ox in Norway.

The musk ox is known for being a social animal that lives in groups with up to 30 animals. The musk ox is also a very territorial animal, that will attack every thing that come inside it’s comfort zone (+200 meters). Since these a both big (165 cm over the shoulders, 250 cm long, and up to 450 kg), and can run 60 km/h, no matter the terrain, it’s a animal that deserve a lot of respect. Musk ox are recognized for having the hardest headbang in the animal kingdom.
